Preliminary questions

What is infertility?

Infertility is the inability to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sex or the inability to carry a pregnancy to term.

When is it advisable to consult us?

We recommend that those with no known medical history affecting fertility should consult medical advice after 12 months of unsuccessful attempts at pregnancy via unprotected sex.

For women or people with female sexual attributes over the age of 35, we recommend reducing this time period to 6 months.

For any member of the LGBTQ2SIA+ community and for single people, it is possible to consult a fertility specialist as soon as the desire to have children arises.

What causes infertility?

In Canada, 15% of couples (1 out of 6) struggle with reduced fertility or infertility.

Four major causes of infertility can be identified, which often combine with one another:

  1. Lack of ovulation
  2. Tubal blockage
  3. Abnormal sperm
  4. Advanced maternal age.

In addition, in 15% of cases, no obvious cause will be revealed with our exams: it is known as unexplained infertility.

However even for a diagnosis of "unexplained infertility", our team can recommend a treatment path that can result in successful conception.

Do I need a medical referral?

To make an appointment, it is not necessary to have a referral from a gynecologist or family physician. You can simply contact us directly. The time frame for an initial consultation may vary depending on the time of year and the request.

Are consultations covered by the RAMQ?

Consultations with fertility specialists (gynecologists, urologists, endocrinologists, geneticists and embryologists) are covered by the RAMQ.
