Pregnancy follow up

After receiving a positive pregnancy test, your next step is to contact a healthcare professional who will follow you throughout your pregnancy. Given the increased number of births and the shortage of practitioners, finding a doctor to monitor your pregnancy can be tricky. However, it is very important to have medical follow-up throughout. Other than obstetricians, many family medicine groups (GMF) and specialized family medicine units (FMU) also provide pregnancy care in Quebec.

Women can also receive free pregnancy care in the comfort of the ovo prenatal offices by a team of obstetricians-gynecologists and family physicians.

Many pregnant women in Quebec are followed by general practitioners who provide perinatal care. They treat women with normal or medium-risk pregnancies. High-risk pregnancies are referred to a specialized clinic.

Family physicians can also answer more general questions about their patients’ health. They monitor over 40% of pregnancies in Quebec.

Obstetricians-gynecologists specialize in women’s health, and especially in pregnant women. Obstetrics involves the monitoring of pregnancies and all prenatal care related to labour and delivery. Gynecology, on the other hand, focuses on diseases and disorders of the female reproductive system that require medical or, in some cases, surgical treatment.

OB/GYNs focus on the screening, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of female reproductive system diseases. They also provide care related to pregnancy, labour and delivery, and the post-partum period. As such, they are qualified to prescribe medications and treatments, and perform obstetrical procedures and surgeries, as needed. OB/GYNs monitor close to 50% of pregnancies in Quebec, and are specialized in monitoring high-risk pregnancies.
