Time Lapse

Imagine if we could watch your embryos growing all the time, so that we could see what happened even in the middle of the night: with time lapse technology that is exactly what we can offer you now.

Traditionally during an IVF cycle, the embryos are removed from the incubator once a day for a very limited period of time in order to assess their development. IVF has been performed like this since the very first case. It is extremely important that the embryos remain in a stable environment supplying the temperature and gas requirements necessary for optimal development. This means that when the embryologist needs to assess the embryos they must perform their assessment as quickly and accurately as possible and return the embryos to the incubator.

With time lapse technology the incubator has a camera taking photos every few minutes on multiple planes in order to build a ‘video’ of the embryo development. This means that not only can the embryologist see events that occurred throughout the day and night, but the embryos do not have to be disturbed and can benefit from a stable environment all the time.

GERI

At clinique ovo we have the latest in time lapse technology: GERI was firstly designed to be the highest quality IVF incubator and in addition there is a camera in each chamber permitting the embryology team to monitor the development of your embryos. The camera takes a picture every few minutes using a special light that has no impact on the embryos. By putting these photos together, GERI builds a composite of the development of your embryos. This allows the embryology team to see every element of the development of your embryos.

 

Time lapse technology provides benefits in two ways: firstly because the embryos do not have to be removed from the optimal environment during the time that they are in the laboratory, this helps to maximise their developmental potential. Secondly because the video created by GERI allows the embryology team to see every facet of the embryos’ development instead of having only a snapshot as in traditional embryo culture. By using this additional information seen on the video it helps the embryologist to select the best embryo for transfer and cryopreservation. There are an increasing number of scientific publications indicating the benefits of using time lapse technology both for the culture stability and selection of the embryos. A recent randomized control trial using time lapse indicated a 19% increase in implantation rate and a 36% decrease in miscarriage rate. (Rubio et al, 2014)
