Diagnostic tests

IF YOUR DOCTOR HAS PRESCRIBED A PRE-CONCEPTION WORKUP

A pre-conception workup includes blood tests for both the man and woman . You can get these analyses at the CLSC, in a hospital center, in a private laboratory or at ovo labo. They require no special preparation. A pre-conception workup also includes gynecological tests for women, namely cytology (pap-test) and culture for Chlamydia.

If you decide to do blood tests at the CLSC or in the hospital, they will be covered by the Régie de l’assurance-maladie du Québec (RAMQ) but it may take 4 to 6 weeks before we get the results. If you decide to use the ovo labo facilities, please get the information about the cost of the tests from our receptionists. You will get the results within seven working days.

Cervical cytology should be performed at the uterine cervix by a health professional. Chlamydia culture can be done at the cervix, but also from a urine sample, depending on where you choose to have your test performed. Any analysis of serological Chlamydia from a blood sample will not be accepted.

All results of analysis requested for pre-conception assessment are valid for a period of one year.

IF AN OVARIAN RESERVE WORKUP HAS BEEN REQUESTED

To assess your ovarian reserve, the physician must perform a transvaginal ultrasound on day 2, 3, 4 or 5 of your menstrual cycle. Day 1 is the first day of heavy bleeding from your menstrual cycle.

This ultrasound must be made by a specialist in fertility. So it is better to have this exam at ovo fertility.

We complete the evaluation of ovarian reserve with a blood test that assesses hormonal levels of FSH, AMH and estradiol. This blood test should also be done on day 2, 3, 4 or 5 of your menstrual cycle. To make an appointment, you simply call us on day 1. Private insurance companies often reimburse all or part of the ultrasound costs and sometimes also the blood tests costs.

IF YOU NEED TO DO A SEMEN ANALYSIS

The analysis of your semen will allow us to estimate the number and quality of your spermatozoa. The semen sample should be produced by masturbation only. We strongly suggest that you have your semen analysed at Ovo fertility, because we follow the guidelines of the World Health Organization. We automatically include the anti-sperm antibody test, which makes the semen analysis more inclusive. To make an appointment, you just have to contact the front desk. Appointments are from Monday through Friday at specific times.

If you do the test in the hospital, the fees are covered by the RAMQ. Usually, it does not include the anti-sperm antibodies test. The result may take 4 to 6 weeks before being sent to the clinic.

No matter where you go for this test, you must ensure to have a sexual abstinence of 2 to 3 days. That means a minimum of 2 days and a maximum of 3 days without sexual activities. Abstinence beyond this may affect the interpretation.

IF YOU MUST HAVE A HYSTEROSONOGRAPHY (HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY)

This is a test to check the patency of your fallopian tubes. This test can be done in the hospital, a radiologic clinic or ovo fertility. If you get it done in the hospital or in a radiology clinic, the examination performed is usually an hysterosalpingography that is carried out using iodine. Sometimes these places will perform an hysterosalpingography that is carried out with saline water. You have only to call them and follow their instructions. If you choose this option, there may be a delay to get the examination done, depending on the waiting time.

If you decide to have your test at ovo fertility, we will do only a hysterosonography.

To get this exam you must have a valid result for chlamydia in your file. Once your result is on file, you only need to call us on day one of your cycle (day 1 being the first day of heavy bleeding of your menstrual cycle) and make an appointment between day 7-10 of your cycle. It is recommended to take 2 tablets of ibuprofen (Advil) 30-45 minutes before the procedure provided you are not allergic to the drug.
